To reduce water usage, choose dry tolerant or indigenous plants capable of surviving long periods of low moisture. Some of the many drought tolerant varieties available are:

Garden Beds and Container Planting

Use a well-composed soil with abundant organic matter to help with the absorption and retention of water. Pots need more water than plants in the ground - water crystals in the potting mix can help retain water in the pot for longer, Use a good quality potting mix that has water crystals and / or a wetting agent in it.

Mulch

Mulch is extremely important to aid drought tolerance. Mulch reduces evaporation and limits weed growth.

Wetting Agents

Wetting agents applied as directed will have a significant effect with the taking up and holding of moisture.

Watering

Only water the root system, it is not necessary to water the foliage. The water is needed down at the roots where the plant can take up the water and distribute it to the rest of the plant. Deep Watering. Give your plants a good soak on a hot day to allow the water to penetrate the soil and get down to the roots where it is needed. Do this early in the morning or late the night before.

Preventative Maintenance

Dry conditions during drought periods and prolonged Summer months with water restrictions will STRESS most plant life and reduce nutrient levels considerably, so feed your plants regularly.
